The Company carried out major building and roofing works for a variety of clients including heavy industry, commercial enterprises and Local Authority domestic and heritage projects.
Attracting a growing and loyal workforce, the company acquired a reputation for specialist roofing skills and excellent workmanship.
The dual focus – building and roofing – of this family firm continues to this day.
RC Ayres now boasts major contracts within the chemical complexes at Wilton and Billingham. One such contract in 2006 was to provide the civils infrastructure for the state-of-the-art tomato growing glass houses at Billingham.
In 1915, having completed his apprenticeship as a slater and tiler, Charles Henry Ayres purchased a handcart for three shillings and nine pence and so began the family business that still exists today. He set up his slating and tiling company in a small part of a large commercial site, walking to his first jobs, pushing the handcart loaded with roofing materials.
By the 1920s Charlie Ayres was employing eight men. His eldest son, Ronald Cranston Ayres, followed in his father’s footsteps, joining the business as an apprentice slater and tiler in the 1930s.
In post-war years, Ron built a thriving business which saw a welcome development in the transportation of men and materials.
